When a muscle is injured, there is a natural biological process of an inflammation and swelling phase at the soft tissue injury site. After this initial phase, the body then begins to regenerate using stem cells that live in the surrounding muscle tissue. This is called scar tissue.

The nervous system keeps the tissue of the muscle that includes scar tissue shortened, inflamed, and usually in a painful state. This compromised tissue is prone to reinjury because it is less elastic and weaker, even in microscopic areas of scarring. It is known as a chronic pain pattern. Chronic pain pattern can persist for years.

Manipulation of soft tissue reorganizes the scar tissue. Integration and alignment with the muscle tissue is achieved. This reconfiguration with soft tissue manipulation during massage therapy smoothes irregularities, correcting the pattern of scar tissue. Once the root cause is corrected, the pain is relieved.
